How this calculator works
The calculator counts every Monday through Friday between the two dates, treating Saturday and Sunday as non-working days. It does this by splitting the range into full 7-day weeks (each worth exactly 5 working days) plus a short remainder at the end, then counting the weekdays in that remainder individually. It does not know about public holidays, since these vary by country, region, and even by employer, so if your range includes any, subtract them from the total yourself.
For example, from 1 September 2026 to 27 September 2026 is 26 calendar days, of which 19 are working days and 7 fall on a weekend. The full 2026 calendar year has 261 working days out of 365.
Quick reference
| Calendar span | Typical working days |
|---|---|
| 1 week | 5 days |
| 2 weeks | 10 days |
| 1 month | 20–23 days |
| 1 quarter (13 weeks) | ~65 days |
| 1 year | 260 or 261 days |
These figures assume no public holidays. The calculator above always works out the exact weekday count for the two dates you enter.
Common questions
Does this exclude public holidays?
No. This calculator counts every Monday through Friday in the range as a working day. It does not know about public holidays, which vary by country, region, and even by company, so it cannot subtract them automatically.
What counts as a weekend?
Saturday and Sunday, the standard weekend used across most of the world. If your organization works a different pattern, such as Friday and Saturday off, subtract the extra non-working days from the total by hand.
What does "include the end date" change?
By default the range runs from the start date up to, but not including, the end date. Turning the option on counts the end date as well, adding one working day to the total if the end date itself falls on a weekday.
Should I use this or the date difference calculator for a deadline?
Use this one if the deadline is stated in working days, such as a 10-business-day notice period or a delivery estimate. The date difference calculator counts every calendar day, weekends included, which suits things like a rental period or an age gap instead.
How many working days are in a typical month or year?
A month usually has 20 to 23 working days, and a full year has 260 or 261, depending on how many Saturdays and Sundays fall in it and whether it's a leap year. Public holidays reduce these further.
Can I use this to estimate a project deadline?
It's a reasonable starting point for rough estimates, but remember it won't subtract public holidays, so build in a small buffer for any holidays that fall within your date range.
Does this work for date ranges spanning several years?
Yes. The calculator works over any span and adjusts automatically for every weekend and leap year the range crosses.
