Days until calculator

Pick a date to see exactly how many days are left until it, or use a quick pick for a common date like Christmas or New Year's Day.

How the countdown is calculated

The calculator takes today's date from your device and counts the whole calendar days between it and the date you chose. If the date is tomorrow, that is 1 day away; if it is in three weeks, that is 21 days away. The count does not include today itself, which matches how most countdown clocks work.

For example, if today is 24 September 2026 and you count down to 25 December 2026, that is 92 days, or 13 weeks and 1 day. The quick-pick buttons work the same way: picking "Christmas" fills in 25 December of this year if it has not happened yet, or 25 December next year if it has already passed.

Common questions

Does today count as one of the days?

No. The countdown counts the whole days between today and the target date, so if the target date is tomorrow, the count is 1 day, not 2. This matches how most countdown clocks and "days until" widgets count.

What happens if I pick a date that has already passed?

The calculator switches to showing how many days ago that date was, so the tool still gives a useful answer instead of an error.

How is "days until Christmas" worked out every year?

The quick-pick buttons use this year's date if it hasn't happened yet, or next year's date if it has already passed. Christmas is always 25 December and New Year's Day is always 1 January in the Gregorian calendar, so no other calculation is needed.

Can I see the countdown in weeks instead of just days?

Yes. Once you calculate a countdown, the total weeks and total months appear alongside the day count, so a distant date like next Christmas reads as both a day figure and a rounder weeks-and-months figure.

Can I use this for something that happens every year, like a birthday?

Enter this year's occurrence of the date. Once it passes, come back and enter next year's date, or use one of the quick-pick buttons for the holidays already built into the calculator.

Does the countdown account for leap years?

Yes. The calculator counts real calendar days, including 29 February in a leap year, so a countdown spanning a leap year is automatically one day longer than the same countdown in a non-leap year.

Why does this show a different number than my phone's calendar widget?

Most calendar widgets count down to midnight at the start of the target date rather than the date itself, and some restart the count based on your phone's local time. A one-day difference near midnight is normal and doesn't mean either figure is wrong.

Does my time zone affect the countdown?

No. The countdown is based on whole calendar days on your device's own calendar, not a specific time of day, so it isn't affected by time zone or daylight saving changes.
