Day of the week calculator

Enter any date, past or future, to find out exactly what day of the week it falls on.

How the weekday is worked out

Every date in the Gregorian calendar sits at a fixed, known position in a repeating 7-day cycle, so working out its weekday is a matter of counting how many days it is from a reference date whose weekday is already known, then reducing that count to one of seven values. No lookup table or printed calendar is needed: it's pure arithmetic, in the same spirit as Zeller's congruence, a well-known formula for this exact problem.

For example, 27 September 2026 falls on a Sunday. A date doesn't repeat on the same weekday every year: because 365 isn't divisible by 7, most years shift a fixed date forward by one weekday, and a leap year shifts it forward by two.

Common questions

Why does the same date fall on a different day of the week each year?

A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 extra day, so any fixed date moves forward one weekday from one year to the next. After a leap year, it moves forward two weekdays instead of one, because of the extra day in February.

Can I find out what day of the week I was born on?

Yes. Enter your date of birth here to see the weekday, or use the age calculator, which shows the same information alongside your exact age.

How far into the past or future does this work?

The calculator works for any date in the Gregorian calendar, which most of the world has used since October 1582. Dates before that, or from a country that switched calendars later, won't match historical records from the calendar in use at the time.

How does a calculator work out the day of the week without a calendar?

The Gregorian calendar repeats in a fixed pattern, so a date can be converted into a total day count and reduced to one of seven weekdays with arithmetic, in the same spirit as Zeller's congruence, a well-known formula for this exact problem.

When will this date next fall on the same day of the week?

The calculator checks the same calendar date one year at a time and reports the first year it lands back on the same weekday, which is usually 6 or 11 years later depending on how many leap years fall in between.

Does time zone affect which day of the week a date falls on?

No. The weekday is a property of the calendar date itself, not a time of day, so it's the same everywhere in the world regardless of time zone.
