Days since calculator

Enter a past date to see exactly how many days, weeks and months have gone by since it, or use a quick pick for the start of this year or month.

How the count is worked out

The calculator takes today's date from your device and counts the whole calendar days back to the date you entered. The date itself isn't counted, so a date from yesterday shows as 1 day, matching how people naturally say "it's been one day."

For example, 1 January 2024 to 24 September 2026 is 997 days, which breaks down to 2 years, 8 months and 23 days. Notice that isn't a flat 2 years: a plain subtraction of the year numbers ignores that September falls later in the year than January, which is exactly the kind of mistake this calculator avoids.

Common questions

Is today included in the count?

No. The calculator counts whole days that have passed since the date you enter, up to but not including today. If the date was yesterday, the count is 1 day.

What if I enter a date that hasn't happened yet?

The calculator switches to a countdown and shows how many days are left until that date instead, so picking a future date by mistake still gives a useful answer.

Why doesn't the year gap match a simple subtraction, like 2026 minus 2024?

Subtracting the years alone ignores the month and day, so it only works if both dates fall on the same day of the year. 1 January 2024 to 24 September 2026 is 2 full years plus another 8 months and 23 days, not a flat 2 years, because September is later in the year than January.

Can I use this to track a personal streak or milestone?

Yes. Enter the date something started, such as a habit, a project, a move, or an anniversary, and the calculator keeps a running count of how long it has been. Bookmark the page with the date already filled in to check back later.

How is this different from the date difference calculator?

This tool always measures from a date up to today. The date difference calculator compares any two dates you choose yourself, neither of which has to be today, and adds an option to include the end date in the count.

Does the result change depending on where I am in the world?

No. The count is based on whole calendar days on your device's own calendar, not a specific time of day, so it isn't affected by time zone or daylight saving changes.

Does the count include leap days?

Yes. Every 29 February between the two dates is counted like any other day, so a span that crosses a leap year is one day longer than the same span in a year without one.
