Military time explained: how the 24-hour clock works

Key points

  • Four digits, no colon: 0730, 1845.
  • AM hours stay the same. PM hours add 12, except noon: 1 PM is 1300 but 12 PM stays 1200.
  • Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200. 2400 only ever means the end of a day.
  • Say it in pairs: 0800 is “zero eight hundred” and 1530 is “fifteen thirty”.
  • Military time and the 24-hour clock number the hours the same way. Only the style and the spoken form differ.

How does the 24-hour clock work?

A day has 24 hours, and a 12-hour clock counts them twice, which is why every time needs AM or PM. The 24-hour clock counts them once, from 00 to 23, so no hour repeats and nothing needs a label. 1 AM is 01 and 1 PM is 13.

Military time is the 24-hour clock written in one fixed style: always four digits, the hour first and the minutes second, with no colon. So 07:30 becomes 0730 and 18:45 becomes 1845. Civilian timetables often keep the colon. The hours are identical either way, and so is the clock used by ISO 8601, the international standard for writing dates and times, which means 18:00 reads the same in a timetable, a hospital record and a computer log.

The 24-hour clock face. Outer ring: military hours 00 to 23. Inner ring: the same hours on a 12-hour clock. Right half: 00 to 11 (AM). Left half: 12 to 23 (PM).

The clock face shows both systems together. Midnight sits at the top as 00 and noon at the bottom as 12. The right-hand half is the morning, 00 to 11, and matches the 12-hour clock. On the left-hand half, the afternoon and evening, every hour is the 12-hour number plus 12. The highlighted hour is 15: it is 3 on a 12-hour clock, plus 12.

How do you convert standard time to military time?

Check whether the time is AM or PM, adjust the hour, then write four digits. AM hours keep their number, and PM hours add 12. Step through the example below, which converts 3:45 PM.

Step by step

Convert 3:45 PM to military time

  1. Look at AM or PM

3:45 PM is in the afternoon, so the hour will be 12 or more.

  2. Adjust the hour

For AM, keep the hour. For PM, add 12. Here 3 + 12 = 15. The exceptions are 12 AM, which becomes 00, and 12 PM, which stays 12.

  3. Give the hour two digits

Single-digit hours get a leading zero, so 7 AM becomes 07. The hour here is already two digits: 15.

  4. Add the minutes and drop the colon

Put the two-digit minutes after the hour: 15 and 45 make 1545. Said aloud, that is “fifteen forty-five”.

Most mistakes come from the same few places. Watch for these when you convert a time by hand:

  • Adding 12 to 12 PM. Noon is already 12, so 12:30 PM is 1230, not 2430.
  • Forgetting the leading zero. 7:30 AM is 0730. Writing 730 leaves it unclear whether the hour is 7 or 73.
  • Leaving the hour at 12 after midnight. 12:15 AM is 0015, because the hour restarts at 00.
  • Keeping AM or PM. Once a time is written as 1530, the PM is built in.

How do you convert military time to standard time?

Read the first two digits as the hour. If the hour is 00, the time is 12 AM. If it is 01 to 11, it is AM, with the same hour. If it is 12, the time is 12 PM. If it is 13 to 23, subtract 12 and add PM. For 1845 the hour is 18, and 18 − 12 = 6, so the time is 6:45 PM.

How do you say military time out loud?

Military time is spoken in two-digit pairs. Hours below 10 keep their zero, said “zero”: 0800 is “zero eight hundred”. An exact hour takes the word “hundred”, so 1300 is “thirteen hundred” and 2000 is “twenty hundred”. With minutes, say the hour and then the minutes: 1530 is “fifteen thirty” and 2145 is “twenty-one forty-five”. Minutes below 10 keep their zero too, so 0905 is “zero nine zero five”.

Many speakers add “hours” at the end, as in “fifteen thirty hours”. It is optional in most settings, and it is common on the radio.

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both are used, for different moments. A day starts at 0000 and its last minute is 2359. Some bookings, shift patterns and legal deadlines write the end of a day as 2400. That is the same moment as 0000 on the next date, but it carries the earlier date, which is exactly how scheduling mistakes happen.

ISO 8601 numbers the hours 00 to 23 and allows 24:00 only to mean the end of a day. Many organisations avoid 2400 altogether. If a date matters, write 0000 with the new date, or 2359 with the old one.

Myth or fact

Myth or fact?

Myth Military time is only used by the military.

Fact It is the 24-hour clock, which is the most widely used way of writing time in the world. In the United States it is simply called military time.

Myth 12:00 AM is noon.

Fact 12:00 AM is midnight at the start of the day (0000). 12:00 PM is noon (1200). The 12 on a 12-hour clock is the odd one out.

Myth Midnight is 2400, and 0000 is a mistake.

Fact 0000 is the standard start of a day. 2400 only marks the end of a day, and many organisations avoid it.

Myth Military time has to be written without any separator.

Fact Strict military style writes 1530. Civil 24-hour time uses a colon, as in 15:30. The hours are identical.

Why is military time used at all?

On a 12-hour clock, 7:00 can mean morning or evening, and a missed AM or PM can send a person, a flight or a delivery to the wrong time. The 24-hour clock removes the doubt, because 0700 and 1900 can never be confused. For that reason it is standard in armed forces, aviation, emergency services, hospitals and shipping, and it is common in public transport timetables. Military.com sets out the same rules this guide follows: four digits, no colon, and midnight written as 0000.

Everyday speech in the United States and a few other countries stays on the 12-hour clock, which is why the conversion keeps coming up. A nurse reading a shift rota, a traveller reading a boarding pass and a student reading a timetable all meet 24-hour times sooner or later, and the rules on this page cover all of them.

  1. What is 3:30 PM in military time?

    • 0330
    • 1330
    • 1530
    • 2330
    Answer

    C. PM hours add 12, so 3 + 12 = 15. The minutes stay the same, which gives 1530.

  2. What does 0005 mean?

    • 12:05 AM
    • 12:05 PM
    • 5:00 AM
    • 5:00 PM
    Answer

    A. The hour is 00, which is midnight, and the minutes are 05. So 0005 is five minutes past midnight, or 12:05 AM.

  3. Which of these is noon?

    • 0000
    • 1200
    • 1300
    • 2400
    Answer

    B. 1200 is noon, or 12:00 PM. 0000 and 2400 are both midnight, and 1300 is 1:00 PM.

  4. How do you say 0800 aloud?

    • Eight thousand
    • Zero eight hundred
    • Eighty hundred
    • Zero eighty
    Answer

    B. Hours under 10 keep their zero when spoken, and an exact hour takes the word “hundred”: “zero eight hundred”.

  5. Which of these is not a valid military time?

    • 2359
    • 0000
    • 1260
    • 1200
    Answer

    C. Minutes only run from 00 to 59, so 1260 cannot exist. After 1259 comes 1300.

Common questions

What time is 6 PM in military time?

6 PM is 1800, said “eighteen hundred”. Add 12 to the hour (6 + 12 = 18) and keep the minutes, which are 00 here. At 6:30 PM the time is 1830, said “eighteen thirty”.

Does military time use AM and PM?

No. The hour number already tells you which half of the day it is: 00 to 11 is before noon, and 12 to 23 is from noon onwards. Writing “1530 PM” is therefore redundant and incorrect.

How do you write 12:05 AM in military time?

0005. The hour is 00 because it is just after midnight, and the minutes are 05. Said aloud it is “zero zero zero five”, and the minute before it is 2359 on the previous day.

What does “hours” mean in 1400 hours?

It marks the number as a time of day, so 1400 hours is simply 2:00 PM. Saying or writing “hours” is optional in most settings. It is common on the radio, where a bare number could be mistaken for a quantity.

What is a quick way to convert afternoon times in your head?

Subtract 12, or subtract 10 and then 2, which many people find easier. For 1745, take away 10 to get 7, then 2 more to get 5, so the time is 5:45 PM. The minutes never change.

Is military time used outside the United States?

The name is mostly American. Elsewhere the same clock is usually just called 24-hour time and is written with a colon, as in 18:30 on a train ticket. The hours are numbered the same way everywhere, from 00 to 23.
